dirty girl.

this black spanish clay is much wetter than i remember, which is making it very difficult to work with and extra messy ! it’s also causing me just a bit of stress, as i need to finish working with the black clay before i open my bags of beautiful and pristine limoges porcelain . . . but we all know that you can not rush clay. this has been a big lesson in patience (something that i have very little of).

spooning.

it’s good to be back together in france with my favorite black clay. although it is a little wet this year and hard to coil build with. have you ever tried coil building with mud ? not very fun and a very slow process. so in between the waiting i’ve been making spoons. a great small item and easy to carry back with me without (hopefully) breaking. i’m planning to make a multitude of them . . .

châteauneuf-du-pape, france

i remember this day well in châteauneuf-du-pape . . . sitting outside drinking a glass of  châteauneuf-du-pape and sketching this chair across the plaza.

antibes, france

i remember drawing this like it was yesterday. it was on the beach in antibes and it was the shoe of my fellow france resident, lisa nappa. i was always drawn to drawing these shoes of hers, the shape was so pleasing to me. that day on the beach was fantastic . . . the mediterranean sun, fromage, and fun. life should be so simple (and i do believe that was the brand of shoe ?).

encore.

guess who else will be marching . . . back to the south of france ? . . . MOI ! i am so excited i can barely stand it. i will be doing the residency again this coming may-june. this is the place that truly  inspires me to the core. the food, the people, the light, the mediterranean sea, the colours, the life style, the landscape, the language, . . . i wish everyone could find the place that truly resonates with them. there is nothing better to really feed your soul.

tea for two.

i was VERY pleased to learn that this teapot i made will be in the new lark 500 TEAPOTS book due out in august. i made this teapot in france and hand carried it back with me. this one is very dear to my heart.

the fruit in the mediterranean is incredible. that dry hot heat grows such beautiful sweet fruit. i grew up with figs. in fact, it was an enormous fig orchard where our high school would go to “party.” it was simply known as “the figs.” but here in france (and now that i’m a grown up), i prefer my figs on a baguette with strong cheese and a drizzle of honey.

friday field trip (from the sketch book).

june 2012
antibes, france

i am not a big pastry eater (my sweet tooth is usually reserved for chocolate) BUT i do love to draw pastries. france is packed with pâtisseries that house the most beautiful perfect colourful jewel-like pastries that i have ever seen. i was usually the girl standing outside of the pâtisserie looking in and sketching the merchandise in the window at a rapid speed. i could spend hours doing this. to me, it is much more satisfying than eating them.
