the dark side.

i have moved on to the dark clay here in france. this just might be my favorite clay EVER. it’s a spanish black clay  and it is DELICIOUS. it’s the perfect consistency, like heavy wet sand, it is easy to hand build with, and so VERY forgiving. i am in heaven.

studio scene.

luckily, my studio tools are very minimal . . . my main tool is my left thumb !

i am what i am.

i’ve started working in the studio, but for some reason i am off to a slow start (well, slower than last year). we went to the clay store the day we arrived. i decided to start with french porcelain and then move on to my FAVORITE spanish black clay. since my studio is small, working with white + black clay at the same time is near impossible. more studio updates soon . . .

clay.

i l o v e clay in the greenware state . . . when it is still called “clay.” after it is fired, is when it turns into “pottery.” i just realized that this must be why i have always (subliminally?) called myself a “clay artist” rather than a “potter.” and as all of my potter friends will attest to, i don’t even really like pottery. i know, strange, but true. all of my pottery posse are true potter’s potters and really into pottery and the whole pottery scene. but as usual, i am a bit of an outcast. i’ve always been the black sheep. which must be why i love sheep so much . . . but that is a whole other story.

lets face it.

i’m working on  a new series of shot glass/espresso cups with these funny little faces on them. i have an army of them waiting in line to dry and then to be fired, glazed, and fired again. i’m gearing up for the big  palo alto clay + glass festival  and will have a LOT of new work to show for myself. if you live in the bay area, it is a really fun outdoors event to attend, with over 100 artists and food and fun and sun.
mark your calender and come visit me!

BESHERET.

besheret is a very beautiful hebrew word meaning “meant to be, destiny, soulmate, . . . ” it is such a sweet and magical word. someone ordered this ring dish from me with her wedding date and “besheret” imprinted into the clay.  what a perfect little bed side dish to hold her rings in.
i first heard the word “besheret” on sex and the city in one of the funniest episodes when charlotte was trying to get harry to marry her. HILARIOUS.

if you’d like a BESHERET dish, you can get one right here.

RAE DUNN vs. RAE DUNN BY MAGENTA.

i have 2  lines of ceramic wares on the market. this has been somewhat confusing to many people.  one line is handmade by me, the other is manufactured. here is how it all came to be. i began selling my wares 13 years ago, making every single item by hand. this meant no molds, no castings, no interns, no employees, no accountants, no help.  just ME. making, glazing, firing, packing, shipping, promoting, accounting, etc . . . soon i was selling to 100 stores and working day and night, 7 days a week. i couldn’t keep up.  there was a dreaded never ending to-do list at all times.
serendipitously in 2003, magenta came into my life (with the help of whitney smith and the factory owner finding me at the palo alto clay + glass festival). this changed and saved my life completely . . . . and so was born RAE DUNN BY MAGENTA. this is a line that i design and make prototypes for. magenta then has it manufactured in china, markets, promotes, and sells it all across the globe. i barely have to lift a finger compared to what i WAS doing.
this has allowed me the time to focus on just a small exclusive line of handmade wares that i sell here and to a select group of stores.
if the piece is marked  “RAE DUNN,” it was handmade by me. if  it is marked “RAE DUNN BY MAGENTA,” it was manufactured by my pals at MAGENTA.
here are some of my manufactured items:

down under.

every time i go out to retrieve the mail, i secretly hope there is a handwritten envelope or a nice looking package waiting there for me. sadly, this is rarely the case.  but not today, folks . . . . . . toDAY, i was greeted with a very handsome package all the way from australia.  a gift from the amazingly talented kylie johnson.  you see, one of the best perks about the blogging world is that you get to meet (cyber-ly) people from all over the globe.  one of my favorite blog-friend (blend? frog?) is kylie  johnson of paper boat press.  we bonded over the similarities,  yet dissimilarities, in our clay work.

she just had a book of her own poems published called count me the stars.   really beautiful poignant and lovely words.  i highly recommend it.  you’ll want to read the entire book,  cover to cover, in ONE sitting.

but not only is she a published poet, she is an AMAZING clay artist.  this quote tag feels like butter in the hand.  i just want to take a BITE out of it.
thank you, kylie, for the wonderful and sweet surprise.
