everytime i try to draw a portrait of wilma, she ends up looking like a scared rabbit. she has the most expressive ears of anyone i know. i particularly love when they go straight out like this, she reminds me of the flying nun.

this couch was en route to the city dump when i rescued it from its demise. i never would have thought to choose a pink velvet couch on my own, but i LOVE it so much. it lives in my office and i fall more deeply in love with it every time i look at it . . . and it is super comfy !
i am naturally drawn to earthy and muddy colors. that is how i mostly dress, and those are the types of colors that usually end up in my works. but when i look closely around the world, i find it is filled with so many bright and delightful colors. i will intentionally draw things i see with such color and then i will refer back to them in my sketchbooks and they will spark new ideas.
this is a page out of my new book In Pursuit of Inspiration: trust your instincts and make more art. the chapter is called IN COLOR and it talks a little bit more about what i just said !

i have SO MANY pairs of reading glasses. i hate being caught without them so i leave them in all of my most important places: bedside table, office desk, studio desk, car, kitchen, purse, etc . . . i always find the cutest ones at whole foods. the right pair of glasses can actually MAKE the outfit !

the central valley.
the stretch on I-5, between the altamont pass and los banos, is painfully beautiful to me no matter what season it is. i drool over the landscape on every single drive (and i drive this stretch a LOT).

my dad was an avid fisherman. he went fishing every monday, his one day off from working in his restaurants. he would usually come home with a very large black bass and cook it for dinner that night, in the traditional chinese style (steamed with lots of ginger, scallions, and cilantro). this is one of my most delicious childhood memories.
