fourth and clay holiday.

our studio is open for the next FOUR WEEKENDS and we invited 11 of our very talented friends to join us in open studios.  there will be jewelry, stationary, textiles, paintings and of course lots-o-clay.  click on the lower image to see who, what and when, and if you are around on december 11th, be sure to come to our big holiday party.  it’s going to be a fun-filled-fiesta with live music and scrumptious treats to eat AND to buy.

knock on wood.

i love this saying. one belief of this phrase is the association that wood and trees have with good spirits.  it used to be considered good luck to tap trees to let the wood spirits within know you were there.  and now, we rap our knuckles on a piece of wood to stave off bad luck.
this phrase is usually used when one is already experiencing some good fortune and hope that it will continue.
i have experienced such great fortune in my life and am continually knocking on wood.
if you’d like to knock on wood, you can right here.

it’s beginning to look a lot like christmas.

i know, i KNOW . . . i’ts not even thanksgiving yet, and yes it IS kind of sacrilegious to start pushing christmas so soon . . . but i think given the state of the economy, we deserve a little head start this year, don’t you? anyway, it’s not just me. the people at poppytalk handmade put their holiday market up today and i couldn’t resist jumping on their bandwagon.
it is a fabulous place to do your shopping and you don’t’ even have to leave your couch + you get to support independent artists from around the world. i LOVE being able to buy something handmade directly from the person who made it.  it’s so old world.
so on your mark, get set . . . start shopping.  you can see my poppytalk handmade page right here.

out of the woods.

this summer i spent a LOT of time deep in the woods of vermont, and was apparently subliminally seduced by the thick landscape of trees.  so many trees. i am obsessed, intrigued, fascinated, and completely in love with trees, tree trunks, tree leaves, tree droppings, etc . . .
i am working on a line of “wood” inspired items that will be ready soon . . . so stay tuned.

a sneak preview.

my kitchen and i are going to be in a japanese book featuring 20 bay area artists/shop owners and their kitchens. the editor and photographer came today for the photo shoot and the book will come out in april ’09. i am really looking forward to this book, as i love peering into the homes of others.  they will also feature my pals jeanine,  diana, and bradley.

here are a few shots of my humble abode . . . .

. . . and because my kitchen is so sparse (just the way i like it), they asked if i would cook a meal to add colour and fullness to the kitchen. so now i think i can legally add chef AND food stylist to my resume, right?

when it rains, it pours.

my porcelain pourer is featured in the november issue of COUNTRY HOME MAGAZINE.  it is always a treat to get free publicity, and country home magazine is such a great publication, especially their thanksgiving issue. for me, thanksgiving is the BEST and the most DELICIOUS holiday of the year, and this issue is full of great looking recipes to try out.  i am thankful for thanksgiving AND i am thankful for country home magazine.

go even greener.

i am a firm believer, and lover, of the cloth napkin.  not only are they eco-friendly, but they also take any meal UP a notch.  when my husband (who is even greener than i) suggested we RE-USE our napkins for the next meal, i was horrified.  disgusted, even.  though i soon realized the truth: sometimes i barely even touch my napkin.  so, unless we are feasting on cracked crab, fresh lobster, or a spaghetti dinner (in which case we might need two napkins EACH), i am all for re-using the napkin again . . . IF i can be certain it is mine, that is.

and so was born the personalized napkin ring. now everyone in the family can know WHICH napkin is THEIRS.  and the virgos in the house can wipe their mouths in peace.

p.s . . . these were featured in the seattle post newspaper today and you can order yours here.

nest.

i have this piece on display at the san francisco museum of craft + design show, “birds + their dwellings” which opens on october 11th and runs through november 13th.  the show is a vast and impressive array of medium depicting birds and the places they dwell. it is a very eclectic and inspiring collection of work and well worth the visit if you are in the area.

home sweet home.

alas, we are back from our month long journey to new york, vermont, new hampshire, maine, new brunswick, nova scotia, and philadelphia.  it’s funny that often the best part about going away, is coming home again.  i completely agree with dorothy, “there is no place like home.” even WITH the pile of mail that i need to sort through AND the gross amount of work that i am backed up on . . . still, there is no other place i would rather be.
