terrain at styer’s.

2 weeks ago i was visiting my friend lotta at her impeccable studio in brooklyn. as i was on my way to philadelphia, she HIGHLY recommended that i go to terrain at styer’s, which is just outside philadelphia. i am SO glad she did. what a magical place. it’s a nursery, a retail store, and a café . . . all rolled into one amazing situation. we spent 3 hours there soaking in the peace, the beauty, the food, and the inspiration. it reminded me very much of a charming place in stockholm called rosendals tradgard. i was also delighted to see that they were carrying some of my manufactured wares ! it was a win win kind of day.

i’m having my cake . . .

and eating it TOO . . . well, starting on january 1, 2011. i have decided to go on a ‘custom order hiatus’ . . . it’s actually more like a ‘creative sabbatical.’ i find that MOST of my time in the studio is spent filling custom orders. and though i do love making things for people that they actually want, my creative soul is not being fed and i feel like a machine making the same things over and over and over again. this is starting to make me feel resentful, dissatisfied, and dead inside ! SO, what this means is that (with the exception of a few items) i will no longer be taking custom orders or new wholesale accounts (starting in 2011). i plan to be on this sabbatical for 3 months, or forever . . . though i will continue selling wares on my online store. hopefully you will begin to see some new items appearing there.

i am SO looking forward to being creative again, making non functional sculptural work, working on the wheel, making really BIG things, taking classes, painting, wandering the streets, eating more cake, etc . . . below is my custom order binder from the past few months. looking at it everyday gives me a big stomach ache. i can’t wait for my INBOX to be EMPTY !

let it snow.

i thought it was a little too early to show holiday items (i mean it IS still october and all) but then i went into GUMP’S and W O W. it is an explosion of christmas trees, ornaments, glittery sparkly things, snowmen, reindeer, santa clauses . . . the WORKS. and here are MY new 2010 porcelain holiday ornaments. they are stylized “snowballs” with my signature lettering stamped in with words of holiday cheer and well wishes. every single ornament will be different.

you can get yours right HERE.

(click on image for a closer inspection)
i bought this little dish at the flea market on sunday. to me, this is perfection. especially since it was strictly utilitarian in it’s origin. i find great beauty in it’s simplicity and straightforwardness. it’s not even trying to be beautiful . . . but to me, it so is.

diablo magazine seriously super sized my salt bowl image. you can REALLY see the “imperfections” . . . yikes !

cups. cups. cups.

i am doing 2 cup shows + a gravy boat show in november. don’t ask me why. cups just might be my least favorite thing to make. i don’t enjoy dealing with a handle or with a rim that has to be good enough for someone to put their mouth on. but, as always, it is a good way to push me into making things i usually wouldn’t make. and though i don’t “like” doing it, i do like having new work to look at.
