i am a firm believer in the flow. this is being so completely immersed in an activity that you are actually transcended into a state of rapture . . . losing complete awareness of time, people, distractions, and even basic bodily needs. being in the flow has been medically proven to result in basic happiness. i can attest to this. for me, playing the piano puts me in the flow like nothing else. i can play for hours and it will seem like minutes. i can play with the radio on and not even notice it. i can be starving, tired, full bladdered, etc . . . and it does not matter.
i start my day by getting into the flow, and i truly believe this is a direct link to my happiness. i THANK my mom for starting my piano lessons at age 4 and for “encouraging” me to keep up with it.
3 days ago, i felt like i fully entered the 21rst century . . . i finally got an iPhone AND i joined instagram all in the same day. for a self proclaimed Luddite, these were two pretty big moves. i was convinced by my jet setting friends that i would love both of these things, and they were so right. as much as i hate to admit it, the iPhone 5 is a pretty near perfect device and instagram, well, it’s just so satisfying. if you want to follow me and see what inspires me or what wilma and i are up to, go here (raedunnclay on instagram).
(i used these linen napkins at a luncheon i had at my studio today and just threw them over the back of a chair when i was cleaning up. later, the light was hitting them just so . . . sheer beauty.)
this most amazing little beach is on the way to my studio (and less than 5 minutes from my home). i try to stop here many times a week so that wilma and i can collect our thoughts, soak up some inspiration, and run along the shore. it’s the perfect precursor to a day at the studio, and such a vital part of our routine.
well . . . maybe more like 20. yesterday my sister and i took this amazing dress making class from the lovely SONYA PHILIP (she is the girl who made 100 dresses last year) . . . SO. INSPIRING. i’ve always loved the idea of wearing a uniform. it would make my life so much easier. my favorite dress that i own is a simple a-line dress from THEORY that i’ve worn (and still wear) for almost 10 years. i had always intended to find a seamstress to make me 10 more of said dress, but you know how THAT goes . . . never happened. coincidentally, the dress that i made yesterday (in 3 hours) is almost IDENTICAL to it. meet my new uniform.
yesterday we left stormy san francisco and 2.5 hours later we were HERE ! i love the magic of the airplane. we are chrsitmasing in CABO this year. i am SO looking forward to drawing, painting, swimming, surfing and EATING ! what a perfect way to end the year . . .
wishing everyone a VERY WILMA CHRISTMAS.

i was rummaging through some of my old artwork the other day and came across this calligraphy that i did almost 30 years ago ! it is a beautiful anonymous prayer that was written in the 17th century (i think maybe by a nun ?). i’m having it framed and giving it to my mom for christmas. i can’t think of a more perfect gift for her and it literally just fell into my lap. i love when that happens.

today was my first day of calligraphy class. though i’ve done “regular” calligraphy before, now i’m learning how to do the beautiful fancier calligraphy with a teeny tiny pointed nib. it is incredibly enjoyable to spend a few hours simply writing the alphabet over and over and over. it’s like i’m in first grade again . . . but so much wiser (and wearing nicer shoes).
sometimes during the holiday madness, i am moving so fast that i literally forget to stop and eat or even drink. that is why i sometimes need a REMINDER staring me in the face to slow down and pause for a few minutes . . . even have a nice cup of tea.
there are some new reminder cups in the shop.
