roses are white.

vase by rae dunn.

my mom has an incredible green thumb. she has the ability to grow anything, and  with great ease. i always remember her fleet of perfect african violets, a very hard plant to grow. i, on the other hand, have a black thumb. i will easily kill a plastic plant  (luckily, i am not fond of the indoor plant). these roses that she grew are as big as my head. she always keeps freshly cut flowers in this vase that i made for her. it has the lord’s prayer inscribed on it, maybe that’s why her roses grow so big ?

it started with an ear.

when i first began making pottery back in 1994, i stamped my work “EAR” with an image of my hand. for some reason, i felt strange stamping in my real name. maybe it felt too permanent or too conspicuous. but EAR is actually my name spelled backwards and i thought this would be funny, especially with the hand . . . to me it read “handmade by rae”.

i’ve unearthed stacks of these old plates with the EAR back stamp. and though some say these plates should be worth MORE money, i am selling them at our big seconds sale next week for SUPER CHEAP. out with the old . . . in with the new.

evolution of the leaf.

teapot by rae dunn

i made this teapot in france last year. it was inspired by the beautiful foliage in the south of france (one of my favorite places on earth). a gentleman, who lives in germany, saw this teapot, and asked if i would make and sell him just the leaves . . .

here are some of the 300 porcelain leaves i made for his equisite jewelry store in munich, germany. it was actually very meditative making each leaf by hand. i will definitely be adding these to my clay repertoire. i just love how some things evolve.

little soldiers.

an army of 100 handmade porcelain mini cups are marching over to recchiuti chocolate confections for a special mother’s day gift box. as much as i am trying to steer away from production work, there is something satisfyingly methodical about making 100 of the same thing. plus, i couldn’t resist working with jacky and michael recchiuti. sorry if you are one of the wholesale or production orders out there that i’ve had to turn down, but this one was too sweet to pass up.

a good egg.

EVERY morning, my husband leaves me the perfect cup of tea on my bedside table (this is no easy feat . . . 2 tea bags steeped for 4 minutes, a cup of non-fat powdered milk, a dash of organic grade B maple syrup all elegantly whisked and concocted in a mason jar or pint glass and served to me piping hot). and in his quest to get me to eat food before 2 pm, he will sometimes leave me a morsel of food or a smoothie. today he left these soft boiled eggs. i thought the colors and the composition were ever so photo-worthy. isn’t he a good egg ?

bon appétit.

i was happy to see my plates being used in this most excellent food blog called MOM’S KITCHEN HANDBOOK. katie specializes in healthy, delicious, and easy meals for the family that the kids WILL eat ! she is the mom of 3, a freelance food + nutrition writer, a registered dietitian, and a cooking teacher. her blog is chock-full of great recipes and tips that even the “non-moms” will love. (it’s also a very entertaining read).
